Teaching Positions Available
I see from my live traffic feed that many people come to my blog because they are interested in teaching in Nunavut - or, at least, finding out more about the possibilities and the experience. Our school has 3 positions available which will be staffed over the next few weeks. The jobs will start in January. The advertisement can be found at the Education Canada website. Look under Qikiqtani School Operations and then Qarmartalik School Resolute Bay. This is a tiny, multi-age school, so the teachers teach a wide variety of subjects to a wide range of grades. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them, but your applications can't come to the principal, they have to be sent to the regional office as described in the job ad. If you want me to answer questions, just leave a comment with your contact info. I won't publish the comments. This is a great opportunity for someone to get a start teaching in Nunavut as it is unlikely there will be priority northern applicants because of the timing of the vacancies. The school and community face the same challenges as all northern communities, but the kids are friendly and sweet and the school is beautiful and incredibly well-equipped. Qarmartalik School is the second most-northerly school in Canada, located on the Northwest Passage on Cornwallis Island.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI actually came across your blog trying to find more information about Resolute, as I saw the postings today and was thinking of applying. Do you think it will be extra difficult to start half way through the year? I've spent a bit of time in the North, but only as far as Yellowknife, and I have spent some time in smaller towns. I just finished my teaching degree at UBC and most of my experience is in intermediate elementary, with focuses on math, science, social responsibility, environmental issues, and even some cooking. How expensive is it really to live in Resolute? Is there a chance my wife could relocate with me? How is the housing? Any advice that you haven't already covered would be great, I'll keep reading on in your blog. Thanks a bunch,
Patrick
Hello Deborah
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you I am so glad to see your blog as I have been considering submitting my resume for one of the positions in Resolute. I am very interesting in the experience to be gained there. I am a New Brunswick Certified teacher with my ESL certification as well. Currently I am working for my local school district teaching ESL for immigrant students.
I have been trying to obtain as much information as I can regarding living in Resolute Bay. I understand that the cost of living is high - I want a little more information regarding actual costs such as rent, food, internet, etc.. I am also not sure who is responsible for travel expenses, me or the Gov't. Temperatures are cold and darkness is 24 hours until Feb/March - Can I buy more suitable coats and boots there or should that be purchased prior? How close is the school from the teacher housing and what exactly does subsidized mean.
Your post about polar bears makes me a little nervous but I expected they would be a concern. Anything you can tell me would be realy appreciated. Thanks

Hi Deborah!
ReplyDeleteYour blog rocks!! I have been doing some similar blogging about my teaching experiences in the Ontario North and your dedication to helping everyone out with their questions is fantastic to see! I have read a whole bunch of info, and like Rose, I am also wondering about airfare costs. I assume they pay your flights to move up there...just wondering if they provide airfare for christmas break or march break (if they have it there) and for flying home at the end of your contract, as my community now does?
I'll be following your posts from now on..watch out for polar bears ;)
Hi Karen,
ReplyDeleteThe Government of Nunavut will pay your airfare and moving costs when you are hired. If your position is a term, they will pay you a relocation allowance at the end of the term. Other than that, they do not pay for any trips out. There is no March break in Nunavut. There is a professional improvement week in February.
Glad you enjoy the blog,
Deborah
